About Ulaanbaatar
A city has stood where Ulaanbaatar is today since 1639. The original city was named 'Nomin ih huree'. This was later changed to 'Da huree', 'Bogd huree', ‘Urga’ and finally to 'Ulaanbaatar' (meaning 'red hero') when in 1924 the Soviet government created it's capital here. Ulaanbaatar is situated on the northern side of 'Bogd' mountain and was initially made habitable due to it's location on the banks of the 'Tuul' river.
