Statues, artwork stolen from Erdenezuu Temple
The State Investigation Office is looking into the theft of deity statues made by sculptor Undur Gegeen Zanabazar and his students. The statues were stolen from Erdenezuu Temple.
Temple officials said 20 historic and rare gods have been stolen and replaced with counterfeits.
Other unique artwork and religious ceremonial items have also been stolen. Investigators are questioning the temple’s managing officials and a treasurer. The main suspect is the treasurer, said investigators. Investigators have revealed that the counterfeit gods were made in China.
