Number of mining workers increases
The number of workers in the mining sector is growing as rising foreign and domestic investment in the sector is rapidly expanding it.
About 48,100 workers worked in the mining sector in 2010, three times the number in 2001.
The demand for workers is growing due to the building of new mines and processing facilities. But economists say the salaries of workers in other sectors is having a hard time keeping up, a symptom of the so-called Dutch disease. The salaries of workers in the industrial and agricultural sectors lag behind the mining sector.
