In 2009 the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar G.Munkhbayar presented the idea to build a National Park to the District Council, where they approved the project and the first funding of one billion MNT was given. Many were sceptical, saying, “the tax payer’s money will be buried under dust” or “the park will never be built.” The Mayor has shown that he does what he promises.
The National Park is blooming with flowers and greenery, where before there was only vast open space with litter flying in the midst.
When fully operational, the park will embody 1280 hectares of land. At present, only fifty hectares of the park has been constructed and it makes up one fourth of Ulaanbaatar’s green establishments.
Executive of Ulaanbaatar, Mayor B.Baatarzorig and affiliated government officials, Mayor G.Munkhbayar, the project executor B.Saranchimeg and representatives of Seoul who are working together in the establishment of the park, were all present during the opening.
The park is only two kilometers from Sukhbaatar Square. The main path is 24 meters wide and 230 meters long and was built with granite tiles. A large 40 meter fountain has been placed at the centre of the establishment which will play music in the future. Most importantly, the park has a lovely playground for the youngest residents of the city.
Executive of Ulaanbaatar Mayor B.Baatarzorig states, “I am delighted that our city has a new, beautiful park. I hope that many more enterprises and organisations plant and take care of the trees. It is great to see how much the trees have grown in such a short amount of time.”
During the official opening, the “ground breaking” ceremony of the Seoul Garden also took place. This garden will be quite large, including1.6 hectares of land. The Seoul Garden is funded by the Seoul City Council in order to introduce Korean culture and heritage to the residents of UB.
The construction of the car park with a capacity for 300 cars, running and cycling track, tennis and basketball court has already begun and it is expected to be operational by September this year.
G.Munkhbayar, who is participating in the District Council elections, stated that the park is the beginning of his grand project to build an“Engineer Designed Green City.”
